ESXi Reliable Memory Technology 0

ESXi Reliable Memory Technology

VMware has introduced new feature for kernel protection against memory error in ESXi. VMware called the new feature: Reliable Memory Technology or RTM. The feature is one of new features in ESXi 5.5! ESXi use a zone of memory that it’s more reliable than other offsets of memory, so risk of PSOD will be reduced. Also when part of memory has error, ESXi will stop to using the part of memory. There is some other technique against memory corruption or memory health error such as memory mirroring but Reliable Memory Technology can help you on this regard without loosing half of your memory capacity. Because memory mirroring is just like to RAID 1 on hard disks. Dell has introduced another feature on its server by using Reliable Memory Technology and called the new feature: Fault Resilient Memory or FRM. Fault Resilient Memory will provide “Fault Resilient Zone” and ESXi will put its kernel to the zone. The features can protect ESXi kernel and VMs as well. So if you have critical service on a VM, you can force ESXi to keep its memory on RTM or FRM zone to avoid memory error and down time for the machine. You can configure...

What is web desktop?

This century has begun with a big jump in portable devices and gadgets technology. Few years ago, we had to carry our big laptop for attending to our meetings or … . Today, we have smart phones and we can do anything on them. But those are not powerful like laptops or desktops and they have small screen and they have many limitation yet. Today, we keeping our data (Important data) on cloud storage services and our portable devices become smaller. Today, we are using virtualization technology for reduce our costs and we are implementing our virtual data centers around the world. Today, we are using virtual desktops instead of physical desktops and we have some protocols for connecting to them remotely and have experiences same as physical desktops even from a web browser. This is a gift from virtualization leaders to us. But virtual desktops are still expensive and needs to modern hardware. There is another solution and you can have your web desktop. A web desktop or webtop is a desktop environment embedded in a web browser or similar client application. A webtop integrates web applications, web services, client–server applications, application servers, and applications on the local client into...

FIP VLAN ID unavail. Retry VLAN discovery

I was faced with the below log in ESXi “vmkernel.log” and I want to explain the issue and share the solution with you: fip: fcoe_ctlr_vlan_request() is done fip: host7: FIP VLAN ID unavail. Retry VLAN discovery First, I want to say that this is an issue and not a serious problem and you can ignore it but the log will be repeated continuously. Now, what is the root cause? The root cause is using CNA adapters as network adapter. As you may now, CNA (Converged Network Adapter) is a network adapter that you can use its port as network port or FCoE port for storage connectivity. FCoE is enabled by default on all ports and ESXi trying to discover FCoE VLAN and targets when discover the FCoE feature on the ports. When ESXi couldn’t discover FCoE connection, force the driver to find and discover it again. Now, what is the solution? There is two solutions that I recommend use the second solution because removing driver or any part of ESXi is not recommended. As the first solution, you can disable FCoE feature on the ports and remove the driver from ESXi: Determine which vmnics have FCoE capability esxcli fcoe nic...

Loop and pause flood protection 0

Loop and pause flood protection

Loop protection The loop protection feature enables detection of loops on downlink ports, which can be Flex-10 logical ports or physical ports. The feature applies when Device Control Channel (DCC) protocol is running on the Flex-10 port. If DCC is not available, the feature applies to the physical downlink port. Network loop protection uses two methods to detect loops: It periodically injects a special probe frame into the HP Virtual Connect domain and monitors downlink ports for the looped back probe frame. If this special probe frame is detected on downlink ports, the port is considered to cause the loop condition. It monitors and intercepts common loop detection frames used in other switches. In network environments where the upstream switches send loop detection frames, the HP Virtual Connect interconnects must ensure that any downlink loops do not cause these frames to be sent back to the uplink ports. Even though the probe frames ensure loops are detected, there is a small time window depending on the probe frame transmission interval in which the loop detection frames from the external switch might loop through down link ports and reach uplink ports. By intercepting the external loop detection frames on downlinks, the...

Veeam Linux Agent

Veeam Endpoint Backup was introduced by me on another post. Veeam Endpoint Backup is an application for Windows and now, Veeam has made an agent for Linux and you be able to take backup from Linux machines files. This is beta version and I suggest that don’t install it for production purpose but you can test it on test environment. Linux desktop distributions are popular today more than few years ago and many users use Linux on their laptops and desktops and their data needs to protection and backup. Also VMware and Citrix added support for Linux desktop distributions as VDI operating systems, so you can have VDI benefits such as remote protocols on your Linux desktop and Veeam Endpoint Backup focus on this solution and it will cover Linux and Windows clients in future. Veeam Linux Agent has the below benefits: Backup anywhere Back up Linux instances running in the cloud or on premises Flexible recovery Perform on-premises restores from backups of individual cloud instances, or cloud restores of on-premises backups Integration with Veeam Backup & Replication™ Take full advantage of Veeam backup repositories as target locations; leverage existing Veeam Backup & Replication capabilities for granular recovery — and...

ESXi Virtual Appliance

As you may know, you can install hypervisors on virtual machines for testing purpose. When you had installed ESXi on virtual machine, you did nesting virtualization. But think about installation process, any installation needs around 20 minutes and if you cloned a ESXi machine, it will be not worked properly on other virtual machine and you have to change your configuration manually. Now there is good solution and it’s ESXi virtual appliance. You can download ESXi OVA file and import it to your host or vCenter and also you can configure it during import process. ESXi virtual appliance is available at the below links: ESXi 6.0 Virtual Appliance download link ESXi 5.5 Virtual Appliance download link  ESXi virtual appliance maybe updated after releasing new version. The last versions are: ESXi 6.0 U2 ESXi 5.5 U3 The ESXi virtual appliance including the below configurations: ESXi 6.0 U2: ESXi 6.0 Update 2 GuestType: ESXi 5.x (backwards compat) vHW 10 2 vCPU 6GB vMEM 2 x vmxnet3 vNIC 1 x 2GB HDD (ESXi Installation) 1 x 4GB SSD (for use w/VSAN, empty by default) 1 x 8GB SSD (for use w/VSAN, empty by default) VHV added dvFilter Mac Learn VMX params added disk.enableUUID VMX param added...

Invalid Remote Certificate: How to Identify and Fix in Veeam BR 9.x or Newer

I faced with “Invalid remote certificate”: “Task Failed. Error: The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation process” on some my replication jobs between two our vCenter servers and Veeam BR couldn’t validate our target vCenter server certificate. I found a solution for resolving invalid remote certificate that I want to share it with you. Here is my environment specifications and the configuration. The log file locations maybe different with you environment: What Was “Invalid Remote Certificate” Issue? When vCenter server is adding to Veeam BR, its certificate’s thumbprint will be added to configuration database and if the vCenter server’s certificate was changed (Invalid remote certificate), you have to re-validate it in Backup Infrastructure. So if the certificate isn’t valid, you will see the below error: How Can Resolve It? Disable replication jobs & Veeam service First step, disable all your backup and replication jobs that they are related to the vCenter and also stop Veeam BR service because invalid remote certificate doesn’t allow you Re‑validate certificate via Backup Infrastructure As I said before, you have to re-validate the certificate, so you should go to “Backup Infrastructure” and select your server then right click on the server and click...

Re-IP Rule on Linux VM: Best Solution in Veeam Backup and Replication 7.x Version and Newer

Veeam Backup & Replication is one of the best backup and replication software that you can use them in your virtual environment. Veeam BR be able to IP customization during disaster-recovery and you can have your virtual machines in a DR site with different IP plan. But Veeam BR just support Windows VMs for IP customization or “Re-IP Rule”. So what can we do about Linux virtual machines and others?

True SSO Diagnostic Utility 0

True SSO Diagnostic Utility

Another tools (Fling) has been released by VMware engineers and it’s useful same as other tools. Horizon True SSO has been introduced in VMware Horizon 7: Overview of True SSO True SSO provides a way to authenticate to Microsoft Windows, retaining all of the users’ normal domain privileges, without requiring them to provide AD credentials! True SSO is a VMware Horizon technology that integrates VMware Identity Manager 2.6 with Horizon 7. VMware Identity Manager Standard is included in VMware Horizon 7 Advanced and Enterprise Editions. With True SSO, a user can log into Identity Manager using any non-AD method (for example, RSA SecurID credentials) and once authenticated, the user is able to launch any entitled desktop or app (hosted from any domain) without ever being prompted for a password again! True SSO uses SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) to send the User Principal Name (for example, [email protected]) to the identity provider’s authentication system to access AD credentials. Horizon 7 then generates a unique, short-lived certificate for the Windows login process. Benefits of True SSO True SSO Separates authentication (validating a user’s identity) from access (such as to a specific Windows desktop or application). Provides enhanced security. User credentials are secured...

VMware & NVIDIA Bring Blazing GPU Acceleration Performance to VDI!!! 0

VMware & NVIDIA Bring Blazing GPU Acceleration Performance to VDI!!!

I knew, VMware introduced Soft3D with View 5.0, vSGA with View 5.2 and vDGA with View 5.3 and the technologies are perfect in View 6.x. NVIDIA introduced GRID technology and we can use the graphic accelerator for ESXi and deliver 3D graphic to users via VMware Horizon View. I have read the VMware’s blog post before and there is new blog post from VMware with same title! VMware & NVIDIA Bring Blazing GPU Acceleration Performance to VDI VMware and NVIDIA are virtualizing the GPU to bring VDI to power users, with workstation-like performance for GPU acceleration of Direct3D, OpenGL, and NVIDIA CUDA applications. Find campaign details and the sales enablement tools you will need on the Partner Demand Center. There is a question? VMware and NVIDIA are developing new technology for virtualizing GPU or they are working on the current technology to add new features or improve current features? I want to know the answer of this question and I will keep this post update and share any information about that with you. Please share me your information as well.

Netlogon Event ID 5719 or Group Policy Event 1129 is logged when you start a Domain Member

I have this issue on my physical machine when NAC Agent is installed on them and sometimes, we faced with “There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request“. The issue was happened randomly and we have to restart the machine for resolving issue. Microsoft has published a KB and you can read the solutions for the problem: Netlogon Event ID 5719 or Group Policy Event 1129 is logged when you start a Domain Member Also a hotfix has been released for Windows 7 about DHCP relay agent delay, I suggest that installed the hotfix on your clients: Event ID 5719 and event ID 1129 may be logged when a non-Microsoft DHCP Relay Agent is used
